Things are beginning to open up a little in Myrtle Beach, just in time for Father’s Day.

It’s a holiday that is worthy of great memories any year. This year, especially, dads everywhere – and their families – have some fun to make up for. As restrictions lift where you live and in Myrtle Beach, it’s time to look forward to a getaway for Father’s Day.

Myrtle Beach always offers tons of things to do for a weekend away. For the thrill-seeker dad and the papa who wants a bit of R&R for his big day, there’s something for everyone. We’ll cover some of the major ways families might like to show dad how much they appreciate him.

How Father’s Day began

Did you know Father’s Day has been commemorated since 1910? Sonora Smart Dodd, an Arkansas native, began the holiday at a YMCA in Spokane, Wash. The first celebration took place there on June 19, 1910. Dodd’s father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six kids there. Father’s Day traditionally lands on the third Sunday in June. It became an official holiday in 1972.

5 fun Father’s Day activities at Myrtle Beach

1. A round of golf

Myrtle Beach is a haven for golf. No matter what your dad’s skill level, there’s a great course here for his game. June is especially prime season for golf on the Grand Strand. Springtime brings plenty of sunshine to the region, without the summer heat. The Waccamaw Golf Trail in Pawleys Island had plenty of stellar courses, such as Founders Club, Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club, Tradition Golf Club, and others in the area.

Pro tip: Check out deals that include accommodations, discounts, multiple courses, and more with a Myrtle Beach golf package.

NOTE: As with any activities in any city, call ahead to see if facilities are open or to learn of any restrictions or special instructions related to the COVID-19 social distancing guidelines.

2. Challenge him to a game of miniature golf

A day on the links can mean wide open fairways and picturesque signature holes. Or, it might involve pirate ships, prehistoric monsters, or a tropical paradise. Myrtle Beach is renowned for its miniature golf courses, too. The cool thing about mini golf: even the kids can get in on the competition. There are so many courses to choose from in the area, including Dragon’s Lair Miniature Golf, Gilligan’s Island Funland Golf, Jungle Lagoon Miniature Golf, and more.

Pro tip: Meet dad halfway with a trip to Topgolf. Anyone can play, and you score points by hitting micro-chipped balls at giant targets in the field. You can get food and drink there, too.

3. Fun beach games

If there’s one thing dads are good at, it’s finding fun – especially with games. As social distancing is still a thing, it’s best to bring balls, paddles, and other fun sports things from home. Hotels and resorts that normally offer those things to borrow likely won’t have them available. Bring your cornhole set. Local beach shops on the strip have balls, frisbees, game sets and other fun stuff to take to the sand and surf.

Pro tip: Set up a scavenger hunt. You could do one of just seashells. Ones common to Myrtle Beach include angel wings, pen shells, and whelks. Add sea glass and sharks teeth to the list.

4. Family activities

There’s no end to the fun in the sun in Myrtle Beach. Cast a line off a pier and fish for black drum, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and more. Rent jet skis at Downwind Watersports, Express Watersports, or Island Adventure Watersports. Or go big and schedule a fishing charter, with Careyon Charters, Little River Fishing Fleet, or Voyager Fishing Charters. Spend the day at Broadway at the Beach and take things at your own pace.

Pro tip: Central Myrtle Beach, from the Boardwalk to residential parts of the city, is family-friendly. You’re close to it all but in a relaxing, comfortable part of town, too.

5. Stay in and cook him dinner

After any of these fun activities – or maybe as a replacement for them all – let dad have a relaxing meal in your hotel. Many Myrtle Beach resorts have efficiency rooms with kitchens in the condo. Let pops relax on the balcony, watching the waves with his drink of choice, while the family rustles up his favorite dinner. Go big with a Bobby Flay porterhouse or maple bacon double cheeseburgers, or take it easy with spaghetti and meatballs.

Pro tip: Your room doesn’t come with a stove? Rather not cook? Myrtle Beach is loaded with delicious takeout options. Try Brother’s Grill, The Grumpy Monk, or Melt.

Just honor dad

No matter what you do for the weekend in Myrtle Beach, the important thing is spending time with dad. No matter what pace you decide to take, enjoy the beach escape together. Fathers, this is your day to step back and enjoy what it means to be a dad, too.
