Get your holiday weekend started with some good, not-so-clean fun at the 7th Annual Dirty Myrtle Mud Run, set to be held on Saturday, May 27. Not your average 3-mile race, this test of your endurance sends you up, over and through various obstacles on your way to the finish line, which you reach by crawling through a whole lot of mud! There will be live music all morning for the spectators as they cheer on their favorite runners. Get down and dirty at the Mud Run, where “happiness is a lot of mud!”

If mucking about in the mud isn’t your style, Brookgreen Gardens will be holding its more traditional 4th Annual Brookgreen Gardens 5K and 1-Mile Race on Sunday, May 28. This is a tremendously popular race, in part because, with a 6 p.m. start time, it is one of the few evening races held in the Myrtle Beach area. To make the event even more attractive, the racecourse winds its way through the beautiful scenery of the 9,100-acre property. This is the only race being hosted by Brookgreen Gardens this year, so don’t miss your chance to take part.

Memorial Day weekend also marks the annual Atlantic Beach Bike Week, also known as Black Bike Week. Cruise down the coast on your motorcycle, and join the cavalcade of fellow bikers heading out to the beach! There will be meet and greets, parties, music and entertainment scheduled for the biker crew at various Myrtle Beach venues May 26-29. Check out their website for specific details.

Amid all the fun of the holiday and the perks of the extra day off work, it is important to remember that this long weekend is about honoring our veterans and those who have given their lives to help protect our freedom and the American way of life.

In honor of our vets, there will be a Military Appreciation Days Parade held on Saturday, May 27, at The Market Common, the former site of the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. The parade will start at 10:30 a.m. and will travel along Howard Avenue and Farrow Parkway. Get there early to find a good spot along the route, and show your support for our troops past and present.

Memorial Day Weekend can be a solemn and emotional experience, especially for veterans and for those who have lost loved ones. If you need a quieter way to observe the occasion, Brookgreen Gardens is presenting its Red, White, and Blue Salute to Veterans, which runs all three days of the long weekend. Flags will be placed throughout the gardens to mark patriotic sculptures and works created by veterans, and printed information about the various artworks will be available at the Welcome Center. Walk through the tranquil beauty of the Brookgreen Gardens at your own pace, and pay tribute to the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Brookgreen Gardens is also holding its Breakfast with the Butterflies on Saturday, May 27. The event is a great addition to the Memorial Day celebrations for families with small children. Enjoy a delicious catered breakfast and children’s activities in the Whispering Wings Butterfly House, where guests can walk among the butterflies! Participating children will receive a tote bag and their very own pair of butterfly wings to take home with them.

There will be no shortage of fun and plenty of great ways to pay your respects to our fallen soldiers when you spend the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend on the Grand Strand at North Beach Plantation.
